Oakley Straight Jacket

Twelve Straight Jackets have passed through this studio. Everything here comes from pieces we have had in hand.

What it is

A sport wrap with a two-piece lens, sold first as Straight Jacket and later as New Straight Jacket. Both names appear on the pieces we have handled and they are not the same frame: half of the twelve were the New version.

The years printed on the pieces run from 1996 to 1999, and one of them carries the range 1996-1999 on the piece itself.

The flames frames are the ones people come looking for. We have had four of them, in three different flame colourways, which is the part of this frame’s story that a catalogue will not tell you: they were not one release.

Sizing

Not published yet. The Straight Jacket is a wrap, so what matters is the total frame width, and we have not measured one ourselves. Write to us at 16.88studiocontact@gmail.com about a specific pair and we will measure it.

What to check before you buy one

Straight Jacket or New Straight Jacket. They are different frames with the same family name. If a listing does not distinguish them, ask.
The lenses are a pair. A two-piece lens frame can end up with one original lens and one replacement, and the mismatch is easiest to see in sunlight, not in a photograph. We check it and we say so.
Flames are printed, not moulded. On a worn piece the print can be rubbed at the edges. That is honest wear, and it should be photographed rather than described away.
Temple engraving. Model and reference inside the temple, as on every Oakley of the period.
