After the late-1990s Yoga boom, Nike introduced the Air Kyoto in 2002, its first Yoga-focused shoe. Designed by Martin Lotti after visiting Japan and inspired by Kyoto’s Zen gardens, it was approved by Darcy Winslow, who believed Yoga performance could be enhanced on various surfaces. Despite Yoga’s barefoot nature, the Air Kyoto exceeded expectations and became a landmark in Nike’s history.
